WHO’S NETWORK ARE YOU IN?

I was just 24 and looking for my first teaching job. I got the same answer after each interview. I was the 2nd choice! Someone else had more experience and I had none.
“How am I supposed to get experience if no one will give me a job!” My frustration was mounting, until a chance meeting with someone, who took me into their network and liked me enough to allow me to use their credibility to get my first job.
It wasn’t until I was able to get into the proper network that I landed my first job. That job put me into a larger network which gave me the opportunity be eventually offered several other job opportunities.
A few years ago, when I decided to retire from teaching (I use the word retire only so the state will pay me my pension) and pursue a speaking career, I needed to find a new network!
Again, those works rattled around in my head, “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.”
The problem was, I didn’t know anyone! I had taken a leap of faith in myself and my ability to be a speaker, but I didn’t have a network. I had to start again from scratch.
But this was different. It wasn’t like sending out a resume, with a cover letter and a few letters of recommendation, along with your college transcripts. I had to tell people who I was and what I do. I HAD NO CLUE HOW TO DO THAT! I had never given a 30 second elevator pitch before!

I needed to figure this out quick. So I listened to other business owners, networkers, and entrepreneurs give their 30 Second Sales Pitch and I gave mine the same way. I quickly found out they were as lost with this as I was.
HA! I would have to figure this out on my own. But once I did, I was IN! I had the network and the ability to clearly communicate in a fun, interesting, and engaging way, what I do and how I can help others.
I knew what to say and I had my network! That’s a perfect storm!
Who are you networking with and when you do, what do you say? What is your personal sales presentation?
So I’ll ask you, who’s network are YOU in? Meaning, who puts value in you enough that they WANT YOU in THEIR network?
Here are a few tips to help with building your network:
- Go to networking events on a weekly basis. You can find the events that click with your business and your personality on online at sites like MeetUp, Eventbrite, or many others.
- Go with the intention of just making a few friends. If you start by selling, you WILL turn people off.
- Collect business cards. Call within 1 or 2 days and schedule a follow up appointment over coffee.
The 3rd tip is where most falter. If you want to be brought into another person’s network, you need to follow up so you can build a relationship.
Just as YOU do business with those you know, like, and trust – so does EVERYONE ELSE. Get it?
You may have heard it said that “Your net worth is determined by your Network.”
While there is not a direct ratio, that is a true statement. We are, in fact, an average of the five people with whom we spend the most time. A wise friend of mine once told me, “if you can’t change the people around you, change the people around you.”
