So, you get it now. Networking is about building relationships and having a genuine interest in another person. You know what you have to do. You just aren’t sure how to do it.
You’re in luck! All you need to do is ask questions. In fact, you already do this with people you meet casually. You should approach networking with the same casual feel and you will likely gain more success and traction with people. You will come across as more authentic and likable. But if that still has you stumped.
There was a study done many years ago where some college students were put on an airplane and given the job of getting to know who the person sitting in the seat next to them. They were instructed to ask a series of questions about them; where they are from, their family history, occupation, reason for the trip their taking, education, etc. They were to ask these questions while not revealing anything personal about themselves. The random person they met would be unaware they were a part of a social study. At the conclusion of the flight, there were people there to meet the random subject, as identified by the student who sat next to them while they deplaned. At that time they were told they were a part of a study and requested to ask them just a few questions, the first of which was, “can you tell me about the person who sat next to you?” Each person answered the same way saying, “They were the nicest person I have ever met.” The second question was, “what is the name of the person who sat next to you?” To a person, their answer was a unanimous “I don’t know.” In fact, they couldn’t answer any question asked about the person they sat with.
People like those who show an interest in them.
If you learn how to ask questions and show a genuine interest in someone, you will have more people know, like and trust you. That’s the goal right?
Below is a list of questions you could ask to get a really great conversation started. Caveat: These are conversation starters. It;s up to you to ask the next question and the nest one after that. Just listen and be naturally curious and you will do great!
Ten Powerful Questions
- How did you get started with your business/career?
- What did you do before?
- If you knew you had just a few years to accomplish it, what would you hope to achieve personally and professionally?
- Who are the most important people for you to meet that are not customers or clients, to move your business to the next level? Why?
- What do you love about what you do?
- What one thing do you attribute the majority of your success success to?
- How do you measure your success personally and professionally?
- What do you hope to achieve by coming to this event? What other events would you suggest?
- Who have you met here that you found to be the most interesting?
- If you couldn’t do what you do any longer, what would you do instead?
- Bonus: Would it be okay if I bought you a cup of coffee next week?
Warning: Don’t ask all of these questions. It will seem like an interview. Instead have them at your disposal and ask them as the conversation develops. You don’t need to ask them word for word. Put them into your own language. Make them sound natural for you.
I learned a long time ago that the person who is asking the questions is the person who has the power. So, go out and grab the power.
Final thought Don’t sell the first time (or maybe even the second time) you meet someone, or your will undo everything you just accomplished.[/fusion_text][/three_fifth][two_fifth last=”yes” spacing=”yes” center_content=”no” hide_on_mobile=”no” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” border_position=”all” border_size=”4px” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” padding=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” animation_type=”0″ animation_direction=”down” animation_speed=”0.1″ class=”” id=””][imageframe lightbox=”no” lightbox_image=”” style_type=”none” hover_type=”none” bordercolor=”” bordersize=”0px” borderradius=”0″ stylecolor=”” align=”center” link=”” linktarget=”_self” animation_type=”0″ animation_direction=”down” animation_speed=”0.1″ hide_on_mobile=”no” class=”” id=””] [/imageframe][fusion_text][/fusion_text][/two_fifth][two_third last=”no” spacing=”yes” center_content=”no” hide_on_mobile=”no” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” border_position=”all” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”” animation_speed=”0.1″ class=”” id=””][tagline_box backgroundcolor=”#c5d4e2″ shadow=”yes” shadowopacity=”0.7″ border=”1px” bordercolor=”” highlightposition=”top” content_alignment=”left” link=”https://breakdownthewall.com/” linktarget=”_blank” modal=”” button_size=”” button_shape=”” button_type=”3D” buttoncolor=”blue” button=”Break Down The Wall” title=”” description=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” animation_type=”0″ animation_direction=”down” animation_speed=”0.1″ class=”” id=””]Bearj Jehanian is a Maximum Potential Speaker and Trainer.
