HOW DO YOU DECIDE?

Sense or sensibility - Brain or heartWe all  remember the iconic moment in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” when both Indiana and his adversary, Walter Donavan, are forced to choose and drink from the Cup of Christ  The Knight guarding the cup, warned to choose wisely. Choosing the correct cup meant ever-lasting life, but choosing the incorrect cup meant you bite the big one! The bad guy, Walter Donavan, had wealth and riches on his mind.  He was thinking of himself and not who Christ was in history.  So, he chose a beautiful golden cup which represented riches and wealth. He chose poorly, so is face melted and he turned to dust!  Indiana, reasoned through his decision and thought not with the heart but with his head and chose the “cup of a carpenter.”  He chose wisely and was able to save his father’s life.

Unless you live in a cocoon, you face many impact-full decisions every day of your life.  Some are gigantic decisions from which you see immediate results.  Others are the small decisions we make each day which, over time, can and will have a deep impact on your life and those around you.  Either way, how we come to our decisions many times determines the outcome.

Here are three ways I believe we make decisions:

1. With the heart.  This is definitely the way to make a decision about marriage or how much your love your children, but it doesn’t work for business.  A good friend once told me when emotions rise, intelligence is decreased.  These decisions are usually made with little or no information.

2. For short term gain.  This is never a good idea, since usually these type of decisions make life more difficult in the long term.

3. Based on the facts with a dose of intuition mixed in.  This is the formula for the best outcome. This type of thinking produces log-term gain and happiness. Always do your due diligence and you will be much happier with your outcomes. Trust your intuition as it usually guides us in the proper direction for who we are as a person.

While we never know the full reach of our decisions, even after we are someday gone from this earth, we can always put ourselves in a better position to create long term happiness, wealth, and freedom by considering our options wisely.  So, the next time you are faced with an important decision, or even those daily mundane decisions, remember to “choose wisely.”

Believe in yourself.  Decide wisely.  Act on your decisions every day!
